First off, my personal views on politics are as unbiased as you will find. I don’t care about Trump or Harris. I don’t care about Republicans or Democrats. I care about the country and how political decisions will affect normal Americans and markets. Now…
That was a fantastic debate.
The Vice Presidential debate between JD Vance and Tim Walz was dramatically different from the two Presidential debates we saw earlier this year. It was policy heavy and they both focused on the issues with very little personal attacks. I’m sure there are millions of Americans tonight wishing that these were the two candidates running for President instead.
JD Vance introduced himself to America with an absolute masterclass. He might be one of the best public speakers in politics today and is by far the smartest person running on both tickets. Tim Walz also did well himself and gave Americans more details and policy views from the Harris campaign than Kamala has all year.
Ultimately… JD Vance won this debate and he did it with ease.
This debate performance by Vance was the exact reason Trump chose him to be his Vice President. He has been hosting campaign rallies, speaking with the media and taking questions from the press non-stop for months now. This is his strength. Vance provides a “presidential” sound and image to the ticket that Trump can’t. On the other hand, Tim Walz also did solid and held his own. He started off terribly and actually look scared for the first few minutes, but as he warmed up he got much better. Even so, it was nowhere near the level of Vance. It felt like a 140 IQ vs. 105 IQ debate, and everyone (on both sides) quickly knew who the 140 IQ candidate was.
How does this debate affect the race?
Like most Vice Presidential debates, I don’t think this will have a meaningful impact on the election. It will quickly begin to fade into the news cycle and the focus will shift back onto Trump and Kamala as we head into the final weeks.
However, I do think this debate might have changed JD Vance’s personal image in many Americans’ minds. Before tonight, his image for millions of voters was based purely on media hits and social media clips of him calling 40-year-old women “childless cat ladies”. This debate performance may have, and likely did, change some minds and introduced him in a new light… specifically to independents and women.
Tonight, in front of tens of millions of Americans, JD Vance seemed like a very smart and polished politician. In my opinion, if Trump wins this election you will see JD Vance at the top of the Republican ticket in 2028, and this debate will be looked back on as his national launch pad.
